What's #1 on my gaming wishlist for 2012? Runequest (6th edition) from the Design Mechanism.
Runequest is pretty much my favorite fantasy tabletop game. I've been fond of it since I picked up the Avalon Hill 3rd edition back in the mid-80s. I really enjoyed Mongoose Publishing's Runequest II - the last edition of Runequest - even though MGP seemed to do their best to release a substandard product. (Poor interior art, crappy editing, strange layout). MRQII served as the foundation for one of the best fantasy campaigns that I've run, and it did the job very well. I credit the solid game mechanics and general playability of the system for that.
Fast-forward to recent history: Mongoose dropped their license for Runequest and Glorantha, instead deciding to reissue Runequest II in a different format, with a different name. The Design Mechanism (which consist of the original head writers of Runequest II) grab the RQ and Glorantha license and get to work making an already solid rules set even better.
From what forum posts I've read, RQ6 is deep in playtest, and the game isn't likely to see the light of day until some time in the Spring. This is a release that I am very excited to get my hands on. I can see it fueling a number of campaigns, for years to come.
We want to go back to the Shadow Kindgoms! Back to them, I say!
